European Producers: The “Ugly” Co-production – A Wonderful Experience

Case study of an international co-production with a € 14 million package, (feature film and 26 x 26’ series) between Denmark, Ireland, Germany and France.



Ralph Christians studied Social Science and Communications at the universities of Wuppertal and Bochum in the early seventies. He was editor for the nationwide, satirical magazine "Pardon" in Frankfurt and editor-in-chief for a daily newspaper in North-Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He joined the film industry in 1980 as a journalist working for news and political magazine programmes and produced his first films, mostly investigative documentaries, for public broadcasters, ARD channel in Germany.

Karsten Kiilerich is Director and Creator of TV and shorts at the Danish company, A.Film. He has directed a variety of children´s TV series and films, most recently "Ugly Duckling and Me", "Bibi & Tina" and "Bibi Blocksberg". His short film "When Life Departs" was nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Animated Short in 1999.

A. Film A/S is Scandinavias largest animation company. It has a permanent staff of 30 professionals, with 50 or more added on site during full feature production. Currently, A. Film A/S is producing its next CG animated feature “The Ugly Duckling And Me” and a tv series based on the same concept, as well as episodes for a Pettson and Findus TV-series and two series with German Bibi Blocksberg.
