High-End Rendering on the GPU: Promise and Perils
John Schlag, Senior Film Software Engineer, NVIDIA

Based on the Nvidia Film Team's experience in writing Gelato - a high-end, film-quality renderer which runs partly on the GPU - we'll look at what makes GPU-based rendering so enticing, and so difficult. A variety of factors - technical, artistic, financial and political - will be examined. Gelato's overall approach to rendering will be described, as well as how Gelato fits into a typical studio production pipeline.

John Schlag studied at the Carnegie-Mellon University Robotics Institute from 1981-1984. He worked for NYIT Computer Graphics Lab, Island Graphics Corporation, MacroMind 3D, for Industrial Light and Magic as CG Supervisor, for H5B5 Media AG as Visual Effects Supervisor, for Esc Entertainment as Digital Effects Supervisor and finally for Nvidia Corporation as Film Software Engineer.
