Digital Cinema: There and back again - New Adventures in Visual Effects
Alex Lemke, Senior Compositor / VFX Supervisor

After having worked on international productions for several years, the author has moved back to germany two years ago and has been busy with German films ever since. This lecture focuses on the question: what are the differences between working on a big budget Hollywood movie and an average German production? And how do those differences affect the way visual effects are created in Germany?

Having been intrigued by visual effects ever since he saw "Star Wars" when he was 6 years old, Alex Lemke started his career in traditional optical effects work before moving into the digital world in 1994 at Arri Digital FiIm. There he worked in scanning/recording before moving quickly into compositing. Since 2000 he has been working as a freelance Compositor and VFX Supervisor at many national and international facilities, his credits including "Dark City", the whole "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy, "Troy" and most recently in Germany, "Es ist ein Elch entsprungen" (A Christmoose Tale) and "Die Wolke" (The Cloud). He is also lecturing the course "Digital Arts and Compositing" at the Vienna Film Academy, Austria.
