What Filmmakers Should Know About Games
Doug Cooper, Visual Effects Supervisor, DreamWorks Animation

Games based on feature films are becoming an integral part of the whole package of a film property. But all too often, the development of the game takes a back-seat to the development of the film, and the quality of the delivered game can suffer from it. This presentation will highlight key considerations that filmmakers and visual effects professionals should know to get the most out of the collaboration with a game developer or publisher. Based on personal experience, and information gathered from mutiple game developers and filmmakers, Cooper will present the most important points to making your collaboration a successful one, including: managing creative collaboration, sharing digital assets, and how to get the most out of the game developer relationship. The impact of next generation game hardware on this collaboration will also be examined.

Doug has 15 years of computer graphics film production experience, with the last 10 of those years spent on multiple film projects at DreamWorks Animation, where he currently serves as visual effects supervisor on the upcoming CG Feature Bee Movie. Prior to joining DreamWorks, Doug worked on two animated feature projects for Amblimation in London. Throughout his career, he has worked in the capacity of Visual Effects Supervisor, Digital Supervisor, Head of Effects, Effects Animator, Technical Director, and Software Developer. During his most recently completed project, "Shark Tale", Doug collaborated closely with the game publisher and developer to provide assets and reference material for the game based on the film.

DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks Animation developes and produces high quality computer generated (CG) animated films. In 1994 Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen founded DreamWorks SKG, a diversified entertainment company. Under the leadership of Mr. Katzenberg, the animation division has developed into a CG animation studio with multiple production locations including DreamWorks’ Northern California campus, PDI/DreamWorks and its Southern California campus in Glendale, California. In 2005 DreamWorks had another smash hit with "Madagscar" and summer 2006 will see the release of our current feature animation "Over the Hedge".
