New Directions in Visual Development
Christian Schellewald, DreamWorks Animation

Christian Schellewald, Art Director on Dreamworks Animation's upcoming film "OVER THE HEDGE", will speak about the challenges involved in the visual development process for CG animated movies. In the evolution from 2D to 3D design, animation designers must pay closer attention to the 3D spaces they are creating, bearing in mind the technical requirements of Layout and Lighting, among other considerations. Christian will also discuss the increasingly important relationship between the Art Director/Production Designer and the Visual Effects Supervisor.

Christian Schellewald studied "Visual Communication" in Essen. After graduating he worked as an Illustrator for advertising agencies and magazines in Gemany. In 1993 Christian went to London to work for Steven Spielberg's "Amblimation" feature animation studio as a layout artist. In 1994, following Amblimation's relocation to Los Angeles, Christian also moved to the USA. In 1995 he joined new studio Dreamworks as a visual development artist and art director on several feature films both 2D and 3D.

DreamWorks Animation

DreamWorks Animation developes and produces high quality computer generated (CG) animated films. In 1994 Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen founded DreamWorks SKG, a diversified entertainment company. Under the leadership of Mr. Katzenberg, the animation division has developed into a CG animation studio with multiple production locations including DreamWorks’ Northern California campus, PDI/DreamWorks and its Southern California campus in Glendale, California. In 2005 DreamWorks had another smash hit with "Madagscar" and in summer 2006 you will see the release of our current feature animation "Over the Hedge".
